Trichomoniasis

(Trick-oh-mo-NEYE-ah-sis)

Trichomoniasis, also called “trich”, is a microscopic parasite that causes vaginal infections in women and urethral infections in men. Trichomoniasis is spread primarily through sexual contact and affects approximately 5 million Americans every year.

Common Symptoms:
  • Frothy, often unpleasant-smelling discharge.
  • Itching in and around the vagina.
  • Blood spotting in the discharge.
  • Swelling in the groin.
  • Urinating more often than usual- often with pain and burning.
Testing and Treatment: Testing and treatment services for Trichomoniasis are available at all PPWP health center sites. Please see Fees for Services on our website for more information about our sliding fee options.
Testing: The diagnosis of Trichomoniasis can be confirmed by completing a microscopic examination of a sample of the vaginal discharge.
Treatment: Both partners can be successfully treated with drugs.
Reduce Your Risk: The use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of contracting Trichomoniasas.
