Pubic Lice, Crabs and Scabies

Pubic lice, also referred to as crabs, are tiny insects that live in hair on the skin. Scabies are tiny mites that burrow under the skin causing an itchy rash. Both lice and scabies can be spread through sexual contact but can also be picked up by sharing bed linen, brushes, clothes, or other types of close contact from an infected person.

Every year, millions of people experience infections from pubic lice or scabies.

Common Symptoms:
  • Severe itching.
  • May be able to see insects or eggs.
  • Scabies dig in skin, creating visible reddish lines in the genital area, between fingers, under arms and on feet.
Testing and Treatment: Testing and treatment services for lice and scabies are available at all PPWP health center sites. Please see Fees for Services on our website for more information about our sliding fee options.
Testing: A clinician will conduct a visual exam for signs of lice or scabies. If needed a microscopic identification of the infected area can be used.
Treatment: Application of a prescribed lotion or shampoo. Wash all clothing and bedding in hot water.
