Herpes

(HER-peez)

Genital herpes is a disease caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types. Type 1 usually causes oral herpes, which result in cold sores or fever blisters in and near the mouth. Type 2 may cause lesions in the genital area. The genital herpes virus remains in a dormant state in the body for long periods of time. The herpes can be triggered, causing a recurrence of symptoms or a more actively contagious state without symptoms. Triggers can include fever, menstruation, stress and bright sunlight.

Both types of genital herpes may be sexually transmitted.

More than 45 million Americans have been diagnosed with genital herpes. Like many other viruses, the herpes simplex virus remains in the body for life.

Common Symptoms:
  • Painful blisters that can occur on the mouth, vagina, cervix, penis. anus or anywhere the virus entered the body.
  • Sores will dry up and disappear in 5-21 days.
  • Burning while urinating.
  • Fever or headaches.
  • Tiredness.
Testing and Treatment: Testing and treatment services for genital herpes are available at all PPWP health center sites. Please see Fees for Services on our website for more information about our sliding fee options.
Testing: There are several tests available. Your medical provider can determine which test is the most appropriate.
Treatment: Although there is no medical cure, genital herpes can be treated with an antiviral medication. Early treatment with an antiviral may shorten the course of the painful skin lesions and may lessen the chance of transmitting the virus to your partner.
Reduce Your Risk: Using a condom or dental dam during sex will reduce the risk of genital herpes if it covers the area where the virus is shedding. Avoid sex if you or your partner has visible sores on the genitals and avoid oral sex from someone who has a sore on his or her mouth.
