Colposcopy and Cryotherapy

A colposcopy is a painless examination of the cervix and vagina with a low power telescope, called a colposcope, which is mounted on a stand. If your pap tests indicate the presence of abnormal cells or if a visual exam of the cervix looks abnormal, a colposcopy may be used to help diagnosis diseases and develop a plan for treatment.

When an abnormal area is detected, a biopsy will be taken to confirm the abnormality.

Cryotherapy is used to treat an area of tissue on the cervix. This procedure uses a speculum to open the vaginal walls. The cervix is touched lightly with an instrument, called a cryoprobe, that rapidly freezes the abnormal tissue. The procedure takes several minutes.
