Spermicide

Spermicide is a birth controlVoluntary limitation or control of the number of children conceived, especially by planned use of contraceptive techniques. method that contains chemicals that stop sperm from moving. Spermicides are available in different forms, including creams, film, foams, gels, and suppositories.Spermicide can be used alone, or it can be used with other birth control methods to make them more effective. It is always used with the diaphragm and cervical cap.

                   Effectiveness:              

• 71-96% effective in preventing pregnancy; does not protect against sexually transmitted infections or HIV.

Advantages:                 

• No exam needed
• Can be easily purchased at a drugstore or grocery store without a prescription.

Disadvantages:            

• Must be inserted before each act of intercourse.
• Can be messy.
• Rarely, a woman can be allergic to a specific brand of spermacide.  

Availability:                  

• Spermicide is not available at PPWP health center sites.
• Check your local drug or grocery store.
