A new patch is placed on the skin once a week for three weeks in a row, followed by a patch-free week.  The patch releases hormones into the bloodstream, stops the ovaries from releasing eggs, thickens mucus at the cervix to prevent sperm from entering the uterus and changes the lining of the uterus so it is more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the lining.
