The diaphragm is a shallow, dome-shaped cup with a
flexible rim. It is made of latex. You insert it into the vagina. When
it is in place, it covers the cervix. Diaphragms prevent pregnancy by keeping sperm from joining with an
egg. In order to be as effective as possible, the diaphragm must be
used with spermicide cream or jelly.
Effectiveness:
Advantages:
- The diaphragm can be used for several years.
- Provides some protection against STIs.
Disadvantages:
- Can be messy.
- May increase risk of urinary tract infections.
Availability:
- The diaphragm is not available at PPWP health center sites. Clinicians will provide prescriptions to patients that can be filled at drug stores.
