In-clinic Abortion Services

In-clinic abortion services are available at PPWP for individuals who have chosen to discontinue their pregnancy and who are up to 18 weeks pregnant.  This in-clinic procedure utilizes either a manual or an electric vacuum aspirator that provides suction through a thin tube. The thin tube is inserted just inside the cervix and the suction empties the uterus. Although this procedure takes 5-15 minutes, patients can expect to be in the clinic for 3-5 hours.  In some cases it may be necessary to prepare the cervix before the procedure. For those who require cervical preparation the expected in-clinic time is 4-8 hours, although the actual pregnancy termination takes less than 15 minutes.

During your in-clinic time, we will be completing your paperwork and preparing you for the abortion procedure. You can reduce your time by completing your paper work prior to your appointment.  You will also have an after procedure wait time so that we can monitor vaginal bleeding, cramping and health status. During this time you can discuss birth control methods that are available to you following your procedure.

Women obtaining an abortion in the state of Pennsylvania are required to undergo state-mandated counseling at least 24 hours before taking the abortion pill or having an in-clinic abortion. PPWP can provide counseling over the phone or in person depending on the client’s preference.

If you are under the age of 18 and want to obtain an abortion in the state of Pennsylvania you must have the consent of one parent or have completed a judicial bypass procedure. PPWP’s staff will provide information and assistance to clients seeking a judicial bypass.
